The Wonder Looper Amami Hand Dyed T-Shirt brings together an exceptional range of materials and traditional dyeing methods in a single garment. Every piece is made start to finish in Japan, combining refined fabric development with hand-dyeing traditions native to the islands of Amami.
The 280gsm jersey is knit from a blend of three cottons: recycled cotton collected during the yarn-spinning process, offcuts from Wonder Looper's Double Heavyweight T-shirts, and luxurious Extra Long Staple (ELS) organic cotton. Knit at low tension and slow speed, the fabric is remarkably soft and bouncy, with a rich slubby texture across the surface. This texture interacts beautifully with natural dyeing — variations within the fabric absorb color at slightly different rates, producing subtle depth and tonal complexity that flat, factory-dyed cloth cannot replicate.
Each garment is hand-dyed in Amami — an island chain in southern Japan known for its centuries-old dyeing traditions. To create a truly one-of-a-kind garment, artisans apply three natural dye techniques to a single T-shirt using shibori, a Japanese method similar to Western tie-dye. The shirt is tied off and section-dyed in stages: first with the warm, rosy dye of the Sharinbai tree; then with Sharinbai combined with Amami's iron-rich dorozome mud dye; and finally with Sharinbai layered under repeated dorozome immersions, producing an almost black tone.
The result is a layered, dimensional finish unique to each piece — a natural gradient that reflects the hands, materials, and traditions of Amami in every panel of the shirt.
The crewneck features a modern athletic fit with a binder neck ribbed collar and Union Special flat side seam construction — a period-correct detail borrowed from vintage American sportswear that eliminates seam bulk and ensures lasting comfort against the skin.
Fit Notes: This model fits true to size and runs slightly larger than most Japanese T-shirts. We recommend taking your usual size for a comfortable fit. Compared to most global American brands, a Medium fits similarly to a standard Medium. As always, we strongly recommend checking our size chart and comparing it to your best-fitting shirt to find the perfect size.
