The Wonder Looper Amami Hand Dyed T-Shirt brings together an exceptional range of materials and traditional dyeing methods in a single garment. Every piece is made start to finish in Japan, combining refined fabric development with hand-dyeing traditions native to the islands of Amami.
The 280gsm jersey is knit from a blend of three cottons: recycled cotton collected during the yarn-spinning process, offcuts from Wonder Looper's Double Heavyweight T-shirts, and luxurious Extra Long Staple (ELS) organic cotton. Knit at low tension and slow speed, the fabric is remarkably soft and bouncy, with a rich slubby texture across the surface. This texture interacts beautifully with natural dyeing — variations within the fabric absorb color at slightly different rates, producing subtle depth and tonal complexity that flat, factory-dyed cloth cannot replicate.
Each garment is hand-dyed in Amami — an island chain in southern Japan known for its centuries-old dyeing traditions. The Sharinbai tree, native to Amami, has long been used in the region's dyeing culture. Its wood yields a natural dye of warm, rosy color, brought to life as artisans hand-dye each piece using the same methods passed down through generations.
The dyeing process is then completed with dorozome — Amami's renowned mud-dyeing technique. By soaking the fabric in iron-rich mud, the natural minerals settle into the fibers and deepen the color in a way that can only be achieved through this traditional method. The result is a complex, earthy tone with quiet variation across each garment — no two pieces are exactly alike.
The crewneck features a modern athletic fit with a binder neck ribbed collar and Union Special flat side seam construction — a period-correct detail borrowed from vintage American sportswear that eliminates seam bulk and ensures lasting comfort against the skin.
Fit Notes: This model fits true to size and runs slightly larger than most Japanese T-shirts. We recommend taking your usual size for a comfortable fit. Compared to most global American brands, a Medium fits similarly to a standard Medium. As always, we strongly recommend checking our size chart and comparing it to your best-fitting shirt to find the perfect size.
