Sun Surf primarily reproduces the rayon Hawaiian shirts from the golden age of the 1930s–50s — the vintage originals collectors call "the vintage". Since its founding in the 1970s, Sun Surf has collected and studied thousands of vintage Hawaiian shirts, analyzing every detail in order to produce authentic replicas faithful to the originals. The results — layered layouts, refined color palettes, period-correct fabrics — represent one of the most respected reproductions of the era.

This shirt features a design originally released by Tropicana Sportswear Co., founded in 1947 by Donald T. Shiigi. Originally trading as Shiigi Sportswear Co., Tropicana became known for producing numerous aloha shirts featuring oriental-inspired designs applied as overprints on lustrous filament rayon — a signature approach that has kept the brand's originals admired and highly sought after to this day.

The fabric is a 100% filament rayon — prized for its soft drape, subtly textured surface, and the gentle sheen that defined vintage Hawaiian cloth. The rich, layered colors of the Bamboo Grasslands motif are reproduced using traditional printing techniques — including discharge printing and overprinting — the same methods that gave vintage originals their unique tonal character.

Construction reflects the same attention to period-correct detail. The shirt features bamboo buttons, a pattern-matched chest pocket, and a short-sleeve silhouette true to the proportions of postwar originals. Produced annually in Japan, Sun Surf designs are released only once and never repeated — making each shirt a truly unique and collectible item.
